Janet McLaughlin was raised in a Quaker family in Southern New Jersey where her mother taught her how to sew. She continued sewing clothes for many years then started making curtains and pillows when she and her husband had their own home. After the birth of their daughter in 1980, she was watching a show on quilting and fell in love with the art. She learned more about quilting from a group of local women called the Quilter's Dozen, who met on a weekly basis After moving to Suffolk County she joined another quilting group called the Smith town Stitchers, who invited guest speakers to come in from all over the country to teach the members new techniques on quilting. Now back in Nassau, Janet is involved with the Long Island Quilter's Society which meets at the Freeport Recreation Center the third Monday of each month.
